| Camp
Carmangay offers its facilities and programs to any social service group,
law enforcement agency, schools or partner agencies that fit its mandate
and criteria. We encourage groups to come with their own itineraries, supervisors
and supplies and provide them with a list of additional resources and programs
that Camp Carmangay offers.
Western Horsemanship Education
With our Western Horsemanship Program we teach youth the basics of horse
care and riding. With the introduction to the horses the participants
start to form a relationship with the horse they will be using. Horses
are a great outlet and tool to teach relationship skills, compromise and
how to be assertive without being aggressive. As the youth progress through
the program the activities start to include horse games such as horse
tag, pole bending, relay races and more. These activities are used to
improve their riding skills and raise their self esteem by provided the
opportunity for personal achievement and growth. The youth also participate
on trail rides around Camp Carmangay and have the opportunity to become
junior trail guides though out the program. While being a junior trail
guide they naturally build up their leadership skills and raise their
self esteem. All throughout our horsemanship program they youth are educated
about Alberta's cowboys, which were very active in and around Carmangay,
the history of rodeos and more.
Aboriginal History
and Cultural Awareness
Camp Carmangay sits on lands that were a winter camp for the Blackfoot
Indians. These lands have never been farmed and have an abundance of Aboriginal
artefacts, tipi rings and sundials on them. With the rich resource that
the lands provide and the nearness of knowledge from both Standoff and
Brocket we teach participants about Aboriginal history and cultures through
the land and elders. We hold sweat lodges, cultural an history talks and
nature hikes. We also work closely with Aboriginal youth to expand their
imaginations and minds to encompass a greater scope than the situations
they may be in at the moment and to promote a great sense of community
and pride in their community and heritage.
Crime Prevention
Education
Camp Carmangay utilizes volunteers from various law enforcement agencies
to provide talks on different issues our participants may face. Such issues
include: the cause and effects of abuse (physical, drug, mental) bullying,
gangs, peer pressure and more. These volunteers also provide mentorship
to the youth while at Camp Carmangay.
Health and Wellness
Program
Camp Carmangay has introduced a Health and Wellness Program. We are introducing
sports and the benefits of physical fitness to the participants that attend
Camp Carmangay. Sports are a great teaching tool for leadership and teamwork
skills and the youth participate in a wide variety of sports from football
to volleyball to golf and more. Youth learn to focus negative energies
into a positive activity that will not only raise their self esteem and
sense of achievement but also provide them with an opportunity to increase
their healthy living. Sports figures from Calgary and Lethbridge provide
mentorship to the participants while actively teaching team sports.
Intermixed with our
main activities that promote civic and personal responsibility as well
as positive self awareness and crime prevention we have a variety of other
camp activities that promote imagination, physical fitness and fun. These
include team sports, fishing, hiking, bike riding, arts and crafts, storytelling,
swimming and more.
All of our activities
are designed to develop leadership skills, relationship building skills
and to promote self-confidence, teamwork and civic responsibility. We
want to impress character and leadership on these youth so that they may
positively influence their community, sustain meaningful relationships
with others and develop a positive self image. Many youth don't get to
experience the simple joy of being a child which is something we emphasize
at Camp Carmangay. We are giving these youth the building blocks for a
more driven and successful positive life. In turn we expect these youth
to contribute back to their communities and people surrounding them, not
only is this a benefit to the youth themselves but it is a cost savings
to society as well.
