Substance Prevention and In-Transition Program (PIT)
Camp Carmangay’s Substance Prevention and In-Transition Program will be housed in Hartley Hall. Although this building is currently under varying stages of trim completion, we will continue to host the PIT Program through Camp Carmangay and our other facilities.
Our PIT Program will help young people understand the negative outcomes of alcohol and substance abuse. We strengthen environmental support for anti-drug-use attitudes by sharing accurate information about substance abuse and encouraging drug-free activities. The PIT Program also teaches life and drug refusal skills. This is accomplished through mentoring programs, family, schools, peer groups, and structured recreational activities.
If need be, Camp Carmangay’s PIT Program can become a valuable resource and safe environment for a young person to have reoccurring visits during the period of time he or she must wait prior to entering long term treatment. Currently, when one seeks help for drug addiction a week of treatment at a certified detoxification center is the first step. Subsequently one can be turned out for as long a period of time as a month or more before the second stage of treatment becomes available through certified addiction centers. We have had, in the past, the opportunity to help young adults fight their addictions by allowing them to utilize Camp Carmangay as a resource to stay off the streets during this very sensitive time.
Creating an opportunity for youth to access our camp resources to support the healing process has been a successful ally in the war against drug addiction. Our PIT program will give access to as many as ten youth per session. Relying on trained professionals who can provide education and awareness, our interactive and challenging environment offers inspiration and hope, and in the spirit of community involvement, together we can effect change.
Referrals to Camp Carmangay’s PIT program will come from certified detoxification centers, law enforcement agencies, Children’s Service groups and third party private family requests. Each young person will be evaluated for compatibility, motivation and risk assessment.
